This was very interesting, especially in conjunction with last week’s epipod. I think it is very important that we learn to recognize our biases and preferences. I know for me, I prefer to get information in more then one way. This makes sense though because according to most learning tests, I am fairly balanced between the three styles — I am more visual, then kinetic a very close second, and auditory barely trailing. I have actually found that if any one style is too focused on or catered to, I have a harder time understanding and retaining the information. Hence, I have learned online classes are not for me unless there is a high amount of interactivity (which there usually isn’t).
Like Eve said, a lot of this information needs to be taken with a grain of salt, but it would be very interesting to see if preferences have changed since the last study was done as well as whether some countries tend to be more visual then others etc. I know a lot of studies tend to focus on one country thinking they can generalize, but in reality, they may only be specific to that country or even an area of that country. In the US, are people in the South predominately visual too? Or because places like NY & CA have such high populations, the numbers are skewed? I would love to see the demographic/geographic information from the studies that Eve cited.
Firstly I love the show it is very informative and relaxing to listen too as well. I did the test and am pretty well balanced between the three. I enjoyed the epipod and was very interested as a web designer to hear about the use of colours. I’ve looked into colours a little but would love to hear more about the stimulating effects of various colours within web design. I am working on a new personal project which uses various greens and red and was gutted when Eve suggested dark green was a bad colour, I am now pondering doing two designs and split testing them to see which gets the best results. I’d love to hear more about how to do this effectively too! All the best and keep up the good work on the show!
Alan, Eve!!!
Slow down! Pause! Halt! I’m totally overwhelmed!
[translation for Alan: I was gobsmacked!]
I love themarketerspodcast and always look forward to the next epipod magically appearing on my iPod, but this one was totally over the top – kind of like trying to take a drink of water from a firehose. And that was just from listening to the first twenty minutes or so this morning on the way to work.
[Holy dooley!]
I know that I will be going back to listen to this particular epipod over and over again. Many of the podcasts I listen to regularly have me nodding my head in agreement, saying “yes, that’s right” or “exactly what I would have said” internally in my mind. This particular epipod had me saying “Wow! Not only are they right on, but I can hardly wait to get to the office and start applying some of it.”
In terms of specific feedback, I am so flooded with ideas that were triggered by the epipod that I don’t know where to begin. The segment where you discussed word choices really hit home since I work in a 98% Japanese environment and have to deal with effective communication in two languages (at least) on a daily basis. It reminded me a lot of Shelly Rose Charvet’s book – “Words That Change Minds” that I have drawn from over and over again.
The segment on colors was another ‘wow’ point during the epipod. While it covered some things I was already aware of, it really focused my thinking and observations. It was especially timely since I just rolled out a new website design for a client here in Tokyo that markets primarily to the foreign community. Their old site, while beautiful, was obviously Japanese. So Japanese in fact that many of their foreign prospects were put off by it. The first iteration of the new site (http://www.tokyorent.com) is so Western that the clients now believe that it has foreign management – which is exactly the effect we were looking for. Color choice played a huge part in the design. Now we’re about to roll out a Chinese version with the same basic layout but with a totally different set of color selections.
Great stuff [good oil]. Keep it coming!
I’ve been listening to this epipod and now I have a so called ‘prepared mind’ I’m starting to see this movement everywhere in multimedia and interaction design. I’m a student Communication & Multimedia Design in Rotterdam (Netherlands).
Today in the Product Development class (also creative marketing) I read an Dutch interview with the CEO of Saachi & Saachi. Somewhere at the end of the interview he says about product marketing:
“People want to try the tea, taste the cheese and feel the dyper. Do something with it! ‘SiSoMo’ (Sight, Sound, Motion) he calls it in his new book ‘Sisomo, The Future on Screen’.”
I’ve tried Eve’s test, and my output gave 36%, 35%, 29%. How cool is that! In the future I will keep this stuff in mind. Maybe it can help my concepts, movies, websites and applications to become better in the future.
I really love the show. When I was on vacation in Norway, I’ve listened all of the previous shows while I was sitting in the back of the car. It kinda inspired and helped me by designing and marketing my website soChicken (a blog & podcast personality community). So keep on going! I’m a fan
